Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate has the personal skill level and leadership ability required to lead a group of paddlers, on short (6 to 8 miles, of at least 3 hours paddling), single or multi-day journeys in a moderate tidal water environment with winds not exceeding Beaufort Force 4.
The BCU 4 Star Leader has the skills and judgement to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experience.
The BCU 4 Star Leader Award is a leadership award and not a coaching award. A good BCU 4 star leader will always have a plentiful supply of top tips to hand for whatever the situation, to help or assist the group!
We offer 4 star trainings with or without the Coastal navigation course and over 2 days, which is the minimum requirement for training or a 5 day course. If you would like to gain more experience by booking an expedition which encompasses 4 star training, contact us for details. We can only do this if it is a club or group of friends who all have the same goal! We can also offer a refresher training followed by assessment
In order to register to attend an assessment towards a leadership qualification it is necessary to meet specific pre requisites. See document “BCU Coach and Leadership Registration Prerequisites” or the course syllabus - both available from the BCU or Home Nation Association Websites. It is entirely your responsibility to ensure that you comply with and are in possession of all the necessary pre requisites at the time of booking your course. You will be asked to produce these documents before the start of your course.
Unfortunately we don’t control the weather! Whether you are coming from a long way, abroad, or just a few miles away for your training or assessment, this is a moderate water award and we do need a certain level of condition to ensure the award is run at the right level. We will do everything we can to maximise the conditions we do have however we cannot run awards in below or above the specified conditions.
