The BCU 3 star award in sea kayak is an award that, when successful, shows that a paddler at this level is a competent paddler who may form part of a led group. The holder of this award will be able to demonstrate a sound but basic understanding of navigation and holds all the kit and equipment relevant for the day’s paddling.
The understanding of Body, Boat Blade as this level shows the paddler has fluid and consistent strokes and a sound knowledge and understanding of when and how to apply them in different environments and circumstances. Rescues at this level should be performed quickly and effectively within the sea state required for the award. The 3 star paddler will have a reliable roll in flat water and can use high and low recovery strokes effectively in Sea State 3 / winds force 3 environment to prevent a capsize.
The award is discipline specific and is the pre-requisite for BCU Level 2 certificate in coaching paddlesport.
